The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) is a purpose-built site focused on world class research, testing and certification of rolling stock and infrastructure. The site is the UK’s first net zero railway and will house innovative new rail technologies that will be unrivalled across the continent of Europe and beyond.

the brief

GCRE commissioned us to develop and populate a bilingual website in December 2022. The main aim here was to raise awareness of the GCRE project and create an information hub where people could keep up to date with developments through news blogs and newsletter sign ups.

the solution

We really enjoy collaborating with clients to craft exactly what they want. Here, we presented several examples of our other website designs and dug down into the finer details with the GCRE team to make sure we nailed all the functions, content and visuals that they wanted.

The result was a fully bilingual website (translated via the WordPress translation plugin, Weglot) that ticked all the right boxes. We added a news feed to the homepage – ensuring that users are signposted to the latest articles – and Mailchimp sign-up integration throughout the site.

We’re big on knowledge sharing and empowering our clients to manage their content as and when they need to, so we provided end-user training videos to help the GCRE team find their way around their new WordPress CMS. That gave them the ability to update users in real time on industry updates and the latest project news.

Great images always add value and interest to a website, but they were particularly important here to convey the scope of the incredibly innovative work taking place at the GCRE.

other challenges

The real kicker for GCRE’s website launch was the strict deadline we had to work with and limited access to assets in the form of images and branding to populate the site.

Teamwork makes the dream work, however, and that was definitely the case on this project. Seren Global Media provided copy and set up social media profiles to keep things on track and we collaborated closely with their team to deliver the website on-time, coordinating both companies’ roles within the project to roll out a smooth and timely launch.
